Magnolia Plantation Swamp Garden 1/25/10
I hadn't been to Magnolia Plantion since the spring (shooting nesting egrets for An Egret's Day- see 11/20/09 My New Book Arrives) so I dropped off my daughters at school then headed out that way. I always feel a little lazy going to shoot out there, because they don't open the gate until 8AM; it doesn't really feel like a morning shoot if you miss sunrise. But the Swamp Garden probably wouldn't get much light before that anyway, so there I was at 8AM on the boardwalk.
I wanted to get some ducks before they head north and just revisit one of my favorite places to shoot. On my way back to where the majority of the birds hang out, I stopped for a few minutes to play around with some light streaming through the cypress trees leaving dark stripes on the lit-up duck weed.
I then shot some White Ibises feeding in the grass (love the blue eyes), before finding a bunch of Blue-Winged Teal with a few Green-Winged mixed in. Even at this sanctuary , ducks are a little skittish. I guess when you have to dodge shotgun pellets for a living you don't appreciate humans as well as other birds.

Another Downtown Sunrise 1/21/10
I enjoyed my sunrise downtown so much I decided to return the next morning. Unfortunately, because of the amount of craziness in my life right now I haven't been able to even look at these til now. It reminded me a little of the old days, waiting for a box of slides to come in the mail and busting it open. Sometimes it would be like Christmas morning, and sometimes a big disapointment. The digital workflow has changed that a lot, but with recent changes in my life, just getting out and shooting for me a few mornings has put things into perspective a little.
So here are a few shots from the other morning:

2010...Wow! 1/14/10
So, it's been a while since my last post, and it's been a tough few weeks to start out the year. We started the year with our upstairs heat/ac unit dying (it was 19 years old and put up a decent fight) and it's been going steadily down hill from there. I'm confident we will emerge from these challenges stronger and happier than ever.
Anyway, I haven't got out shooting much with the cold lately, and so decided to get up for the sunrise this morning and shoot Charleston Harbor from downtown. It was chilly, right around freezing, yet my camera still decided to fog reapeatedly with the hanging humidity. It was a challenge, but I think I managed to show some of what I love most about Charleston: Water, Wildlife and how it surrounds our lovely city.

Happy New Year! 1/5/10
Brrrrrr! Well, we've started the new year with real winter, at least as real a winter as we get here in the Lowcountry. It's nice to have a little chill in the air for a few weeks and so I thought I would shoot some winter birds while they're here. These are some hooded mergansers I shot on a Kiawah Island pond. When the temperatures come up a few degrees, I'll head out in the boat to shoot some oystercatchers and other wintering shore birds on the Kiawah River oyster flats.
