Cutie Pa Tutus Shoot 7/29/10
I did another mini-fashion shoot for my friend and 40 under 40 winner Amanda Duke of Cutie Pa Tutus. We met at Hampton Park at 10 in the morning and I think we were all sweating immediately. I don't think the temperature broke 90 but the humidity was horrible. Despite the stifling heat, we got some great shots with some great little models including Andie and newcomers Emma and super-cute wide-eyed Ashlyn.

Vacation 7/27/10
It's been a long time since I've posted because I was out of town for the last week and a half on our summer family vacation. We first headed up to meet some friends at their river house near Bath NC on the Pamlico River. We had a great time swimming, boating and staying up way too late. It was a beautiful area and completely new to me, but my camera didn't come out once (I was on vacation).
After that we headed down to Wrightsville Beach to meet my wife's family for our annual week at the beach. It was a great time with more than enough beach time and lots of relaxing. There, I did manage to get a few shoots in, our annual family portraits, beach candids of our extended families and a sunrise shoot on the beach with each of my daughters.

Tough Day at the Office

I had the pleasure yesterday of shooting for a project I'm working on with my wife assisting and my daughters hand and foot modeling. It was a pleasure working with them and to top it all off, the location was a boat-to beach. So we loaded up the boat with gear and cruised to the beach and shot for a couple of hours before having a picnic under the umbrella.

Back To The Swamp
7/6/10
After the long weekend out of town and away from my cameras I needed a little shutter time. So I headed out to the Audubon Swamp Garden at Magnolia Plantation to take a walk and shoot whatever I saw. It was pretty warm and muggy this morning and the activity level is down with most of the wading bird chicks either fledged or almost
indistinguishable
from their parents.
I managed a few interesting shots including a Red-Shouldered Hawk which I turned black and white because the lighting was horrible, and a shadow of a spider on a back-lit lotus leaf. I have to admit, I've been trying to get the bug-shadow shot for a while and have not had any models, so I had to relocate this spider to get the shot.

6/29/10
I only managed a short morning shoot at ACE Basin since I last posted, and have still been logging a lot of computer time. I've been working on getting together a bunch of images for several book projects as well as working on some marketing efforts to grow my client list.

Computer Time 6/22/10
I haven't had the chance to get out shooting in the last week or so, but have put in countless hours at the computer going back through old raw files gathering images for several projects I'm working on and preparing the files. It is fun going back through and finding uses for things shot days, months and years ago, but I need to get out and see the daylight.
With that in mind, I'll be heading out in the boat this evening to shoot on the high tide, birds, redfish, marsh and a house. Until then, here are some of the shots I found in my computer:
Bear Island WMA 6/14/10
Before I went out of town for the weekend I had a great morning shoot at Bear Island WMA near Bennet's Point. It's a great place to shoot, or just see a lot of wildlife if you don't mind donating a few pints to the mosquitoes. There were several groups of hundreds of egrets feeding in drying up rice ponds, with other wading and shore birds mixed in. There were plenty of black-necked stilts and some rare visitors from South Florida eight roseate spoonbills. I managed to get pretty good shots of both of those, as well as some great bee closeups for a bug book I'm working on and a few more fun things thrown in.

Even More From The Swamp 6/8/10
I managed to make it through a few more shots from the swamp between many other duties. These will hopefully be used in a future book project I'm working on about animal families. I guess it's a good thing that I can't keep up editing photos, it must mean I've been getting some good stuff lately. It's also been complicated by running out of storage (I have 2 new 2TB backup drives on the way) and I just had a great morning down at Bear Island WMA so I will likely be playing catch up for a while now.

A Few More From The Swamp 6/4/10
I'm still trying to find some time to go through all the raw files from the shoot yesterday from the Swamp Garden at Magnolia Plantation. It will be the middle of next week before I have time (and will hopefully have gotten some more shooting done by then as well). In the mean time I was able to edit some of the prothonotary warbler shots which I was pretty pleased with. Little birds are always a problem, they're quick, small and in this warbler's case like to hang out in the deep dark woods up high. I was able to get these by following his song, and shooting with my Nikon D300s with 500mm f4 lens with the 1.4X multiplier attached.

Good Deed For The Day or Bird Vs. Spider 6/3/10
It had been too long since I had been to the Swamp Garden at Magnolia Plantation, so I headed out there this morning hoping the weather would hold out. It was hot and sticky, but the bugs weren't out. I started out shooting some shots of a beautiful singing prothonotary warbler, then went to work my way around to the rookery.
As I stepped onto the second boardwalk, I noticed something strange hanging out of a tree. I got close enough to take a look with the big lens and saw a small bird stuck in a spider web. I pride myself on having seen many things in the wild, but this was a first for me. It appeared to be a blue-gray gnatcatcher and he was still alive. I quickly got some shots, then tried to figure out how to save the poor little guy. The web was high up over the swamp and 20 feet or so from the boardwalk. So I picked up some dead sticks and started gently throwing them towards the web. My second or third shot dropped him a few feet but didn't release him. I took a few more photos then hit the web just right with my next throw releasing him to the ground. He hopped around in the weeds for a little, then worked his way up a tree and began working his feathers back into shape.
With my good deed done for the day I went about shooting my way around the swamp having a great morning. Here are the bird vs. web shots, I'll put up some more as I get them edited.

Holiday Weekend Boating Fun 6/1/10
Over the long weekend I managed get out in the boat twice with my daughters for fishing, boating, beaching and a little photography on the side. We caught some sharks, hung out on a sandbar in the Stono Inlet and followed some frollicking dolphins for a while, and all the while managed to miss the crowds for the most part.
