Cold Sleepless Night 12/23/10
I set my alarm the other night for 1:30AM and again at 3:15AM to get a few shots of the lunar eclipse. The cool air shocked my sleepy body enough so I didn't get much sleep between or after shooting, but it was worth it. It wasn't much to see with the naked eye, but looked pretty good in the big lens (500mm with 1.4X converter).

Busy End of the Year 12/22/10
The last few weeks have
been busy. I had some commercial work including shoots for Cutie Pa Tutus and Catch Multimedia for Groucho's Deli and some stock sales to deal with.
My mother (author Jane Yolen) was in town for a holiday visit, and we spent some time working on a number of new and old book projects, getting two proposals out the door. Working on book projects always means searching back through folders of raw files and hopefully discovering overlooked gems. Here are a few we found:

More Good News 12/8/10
I found out this week that I was chosen for an Artist in Residence (AIRIE) position in Everglades National Park this year! The AIRIE program allows visiting artists to live in the park for up to a month and enjoy access to all the Everglades have to offer to while creating your art (thanks Marj for letting me know about the program). So in February I'll be packing the boat, canoe and all my camera gear and heading South. I have a few book projects I'll be working on while I'm down there and will be on the watch for 3 endangered species I've never shot: manatees, American Crocodiles and Florida Panthers.
The Everglades have been one of my favorite places to visit since my father brought me there when I was eleven. Now I try to return once every year or two, this time for an extended stay inside the park.

My book An Egret's Day was just named an Honor Book for the 2010 National Outdoor Book Awards. It's always nice to be recognized. My book Wild Wings won the National Outdoor Book Award back in 2004.

I went out to do some more fish(ing) photography on Monday, this time up north in Georgetown again with Captain Newman Weaver of Kingfisher Guide Service. We saw a ton of redfish, it's amazing how happy the fish stay when you're not throwing flies at them.

2 Boat Shoot 11/12/10
I took my boat out on Tuesday and met up with local Fishing Guide Captain Jeremy Mehlhaff to shoot for his new website I'm helping him out with. He was immediately on the fish and with an experienced fly fisherman on board, was quick to land some fish to shoot. I shadowed them for a while poling and shooting them from the poling platform until the tide dropped out too low for my boat. We'll be back out to get some more shots soon.

Commercial Work and Stock Sales 11/9/10
Between staying busy shooting and my stock site's (CharlestonStockPhotography.com) high ranking on google, my photography has been popping up in a bunch of new places. New websites for Lesesne Boutique, Kit Active Apparel and L.W. Cooper Law Office all feature my photography with a few more on the way from KMK Web. The Traveler of Charleston Magazine also featured a holiday shot of mine from CharlestonStockPhotography.com's holiday section on their Fall/Winter cover.

Variety is the Spice of Life 11/5/10
I spent the last week and a half doing a variety of things, a golf course shoot, shrimping and fishing shoots, editing more from the Kit Active Apparel fashion shoot, and meeting with several new prospective clients. I stayed busy, scheduled some upcoming shoots and got to work in some of my favorite venues.
Here are a few shots from my shoots on the water, any day on the water is a good day as far as I'm concerned but these were two particularly good days one I spent shrimping on Bull's Bay with a couple of friends, a great day ending with a freezer full of shrimp, and the other fishing in Georgetown with Captain Newman of Georgetown Kingfisher guide service and John Carr, the publisher of The Georgetown Times.

Quick Downtown Sunrise Shoot 10/26/10
I had a sunrise shoot scheduled for this morning which fell through at the last minute, so with all the gear loaded, I headed downtown since I was already awake. I skipped around a bit seeing where I wanted to be when the sun finally came up (it was a bit late due to an offshore thunderstorm blocking it) but ended up on the Battery for the moment of truth. After a few shots directly at the sun, I walked around South of Broad for a bit before heading home to work on the business side of things.

Downtown Fashion Shoot 10/22/10
I spent Wednesday afternoon downtown doing a fashion shoot for Kit Active Apparel's new line of tennis clothes. We set up shop at a friend of Kit's art gallery on Broad Street, and headed to a nearby cobblestone street for the first shot with Kristin. The light was streaming across the street and we were able to work around the cars (only had to remove a few in post production).
Next we moved over to Waterfont Park where we shot Kristin with Charleston Harbor in the background, and we were joined by Kim for some marsh and fountain shots. Lastly, we moved to the Battery and used some iron gates for the backdrop as the sun set. The light, company and backgrounds were all fantastic and the shoot could not have gone better. Here are a few shots I did a quick edit on before Kit could make her picks from the 700 odd images:

Bloodhound Shoot 10/15/10
I did a shoot last week of a couple of english bloodhounds for a possible magazine project. We shot my friend's dogs out at his property on John's Island with the sun setting. The dogs were great and the property made for a fun backdrop for the hunting dogs.
